Luxury vinyl plank has transformed how homeowners think about flooring. It's durable, water-resistant, and looks stunning straight out of the box. But "low maintenance" doesn't mean zero maintenance. The wrong cleaner — or the wrong tool — can dull the finish, cloud the wear layer, and void your manufacturer warranty before the floor is even two years old.

At TAV Construction, we install LVP on projects across Mississippi every week. We've seen how small habits make the difference between floors that look new at year ten and floors that look tired at year two. This guide is what we'd hand to every homeowner at project closeout.

pH-Neutral Cleaners Only No Steam Mops Microfiber Preferred Seams Need Protection

The Daily & Weekly LVP Maintenance Routine

Consistency is everything with LVP care. The grit and fine debris that accumulates from everyday foot traffic acts like sandpaper on the wear layer. Building a simple two-tier routine — daily dust removal and weekly damp mopping — adds years to your floor's useful life.

Daily

Sweep with a soft-bristle broom or run a microfiber dust mop. This lifts fine grit before it has a chance to grind against the wear layer. Pay special attention to entryways and pet areas.

Weekly

Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner diluted per label instructions. Wring the mop until it's barely damp — standing water is the enemy of LVP seams, even on water-resistant planks.

Spot Cleaning

Blot spills immediately — don't let liquid pool. Use a damp cloth for most messes. For sticky residue, apply a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner directly to a cloth, not the floor.

Always Avoid

Vacuum beater bars, rotating brushes, and abrasive scrubbing pads all damage the wear layer. Steam mops are equally destructive — heat and pressure force moisture through seams into the core.

Pro tip from our installers: Place a quality mat at every exterior entry point. Most floor damage starts with tracked-in sand and small rocks — a mat catches it before it reaches your LVP.

Best Cleaners and Tools for Vinyl Plank Flooring

Walk down any hardware store aisle and you'll find a dozen floor cleaners — most of them wrong for LVP. Wax-based products leave a film. Ammonia-based cleaners strip the finish over time. Oil soaps create buildup that clouds the surface. Here's what actually works.

Recommended Cleaners

  • Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner — pH-neutral, residue-free, safe for most LVP warranties.
  • Rejuvenate All Floors Cleaner — Specifically formulated for vinyl and LVT surfaces.
  • DIY: white vinegar + water (1:10 ratio) — Light and effective for routine damp mopping. Do not use undiluted.

What to Avoid

  • Wax or polish products — LVP has a factory wear layer. Adding wax creates buildup and traps dirt.
  • Ammonia-based cleaners — Degrades the wear layer over repeated use, dulling the finish permanently.
  • Pine-Sol, Mop & Glo, Murphy Oil Soap — Leave a waxy film or oily residue that clouds the surface over time.
  • Steam mops — Heat and steam force moisture into seams and can warp the core. Voids most warranties.

Best Tools

A microfiber flat mop is the gold standard for LVP. The pads lift fine particles rather than pushing them around, and the flat head distributes moisture evenly without oversaturating any single area. String mops hold too much water and deposit it unevenly.

For dry sweeping, choose a microfiber dust mop over a traditional broom when possible. The electrostatic charge grabs fine dust and pet hair instead of scattering it. If you use a vacuum, switch to the hard-floor setting — the beater bar is for carpet only.

Monthly Deep Clean

Once a month, do a pass with a vinyl-specific cleaner at full recommended dilution. Focus on high-traffic corridors — kitchens, hallways, and near exterior doors — where the wear layer takes the most abuse. This keeps product buildup from accumulating and keeps the surface looking freshly installed.

Preventing and Repairing Scratches

LVP's wear layer resists scratches better than hardwood, but it isn't scratch-proof. The most common culprits are furniture legs, pet claws, and grit dragged in from outside.

  • Furniture pads: Apply self-adhesive felt pads to every leg that contacts the floor. Replace them annually — they compress and lose effectiveness over time.

  • Area rugs: Place them in high-traffic corridors and under dining tables. Use a rug pad without rubber backing — some rubber compounds react with the LVP surface and leave permanent staining.

  • Pet nails: Keep them trimmed. A dog or cat with long nails can scratch through the wear layer of even commercial-grade LVP in high-activity areas.

If a Scratch Happens

Light surface scratches can often be buffed out with a specialized floor eraser or a melamine sponge used gently. For deeper marks, a floor repair wax kit matched to your floor's color fills in the gouge and blends with surrounding planks. For a deep cut or chip, the best fix is replacing the affected plank — this is why we always recommend storing two or three boxes of your original flooring after installation.

Scuff marks from shoes or furniture movement aren't scratches — they're surface transfer. A tennis ball on a stick or a dedicated scuff eraser removes them without any chemicals.

Two Common LVP Misconceptions

"LVP is 100% waterproof"

The planks themselves are waterproof — water won't warp or swell them. The seams between planks are not watertight. A flooded bathroom or a washing machine leak can still drive water under the floor and damage the subfloor. Blot spills immediately and never let water stand near the edges or seams.

"LVP won't fade in sunlight"

Prolonged, direct UV exposure fades LVP just like any other flooring. South-facing rooms with large windows are most at risk. Install UV-filtering window film or use blinds and curtains during peak sun hours. Rotate rugs periodically so fading is even if it does occur.
