Planning Guide

One of the most common questions we get before a flooring project kicks off is: "How long is this going to take?" The honest answer depends on the material you choose, the current state of your subfloor, the square footage involved, and — in North Mississippi — the humidity in your home. This guide breaks it all down so you can plan your schedule, arrange temporary accommodations if needed, and set realistic expectations before the first board goes down.

TAV Construction installs flooring across Oxford, Lafayette County, and surrounding communities. Whether you're upgrading a single bedroom or replacing floors throughout an entire home, the information below reflects what our crews actually experience on real jobs — not a best-case estimate.

By Material

Average Installation Timelines by Material

Not all flooring installs at the same pace. Here's what each material type realistically requires, from delivery to final walkthrough.

Material Timeline Notes
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) 1–2 days Best for standard 500–800 sq ft areas. Click-lock install, minimal subfloor prep needed.
Laminate Flooring 1–3 days Comparable to LVP. Extra time if subfloor leveling is required.
Engineered Hardwood 3–5 days Includes 48–72 hr acclimation period before any boards are laid.
Tile Flooring 4–7 days Thinset and grout curing times drive the schedule. Cannot rush.

LVP & Laminate: The Fast Option

Luxury Vinyl Plank and laminate are the fastest flooring types to install because they float over the subfloor without adhesive or nails. A standard bedroom (200–300 sq ft) can be done in a single day. A full open-plan first floor at 800–1,000 sq ft typically takes two days. The wildcard is subfloor prep — if your concrete or plywood is uneven, expect an extra half to full day for leveling before any flooring goes down.

Engineered Hardwood: The Patience Play

Engineered hardwood requires acclimation — the boards need to sit inside your home for 48–72 hours before installation begins. This is not optional, especially in North Mississippi's humid climate. Once acclimation is complete, installation itself runs 1–2 days for most residential projects. The total project window is 3–5 days from material arrival to final walkthrough.

Tile: Built Around Cure Times

Tile jobs run longer because chemistry drives the schedule, not crew speed. Thinset mortar needs 24 hours to cure before grouting. Grout needs another 24–48 hours before the floor can handle foot traffic. A standard bathroom tile job is 3–4 days. Larger areas like kitchens or entryways can stretch to 5–7 days depending on pattern complexity and the number of wet cuts required.

Solid Hardwood: Not Common, But Possible

Solid hardwood nail-down installs are less common in Mississippi due to humidity sensitivity, but we do them. Timeline is similar to engineered hardwood with a longer acclimation window (up to 5 days) and additional time for sanding and finishing if raw wood is used. Prefinished solid hardwood cuts that stage down significantly.

What Changes the Clock

Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Your Schedule

The material timeline is just the baseline. These variables are what actually determine whether your project finishes on day two or day six.

Adds Time

  • 1

    Subfloor Preparation

Uneven plywood or concrete that needs grinding, patching, or self-leveling compound will add 24–48 hours to the schedule. This is the most common schedule extender on older homes.

  • 2

    Existing Floor Removal

Pulling up old carpet is fast — usually a few hours. Removing glued-down tile or nail-down hardwood is significantly slower and harder on the subfloor. Budget an extra half to full day for demo on tile removal jobs.

  • 3

    Room Geometry

Open rectangular rooms install faster than rooms with multiple closets, alcoves, angled walls, or stair transitions. Each transition or threshold adds cutting time. Complex layouts can add 30–50% to labor hours.

  • 4

    High Humidity (North Mississippi)

Lafayette County humidity levels require longer acclimation windows for wood-based products. Installing hardwood that hasn't fully acclimated leads to gapping, cupping, or buckling within weeks. We won't cut corners here.

Saves Time

  • A

    Pre-Cleared Rooms

Moving furniture out before the crew arrives saves 2–4 hours on a typical residential job. If you can clear the space the night before, the install starts immediately.

  • B

    Click-Lock Systems

Modern click-lock LVP and laminate installs 20–30% faster than tongue-and-groove glue-down systems. If speed matters, floating floor products are the right call for large areas.

  • C

    Sound Subfloor

A flat, dry, structurally sound subfloor is the single biggest time-saver. Homes with recently renovated or well-maintained subflooring move through flooring projects faster with less downtime between steps.

  • D

    Prefinished Materials

Prefinished hardwood eliminates on-site sanding and finishing, cutting 1–2 days off hardwood project timelines. Most residential installs should use prefinished unless you need a custom stain match.

The Standard Installation Process

  1. 1 Site inspection and moisture testing — same day or day before delivery
  2. 2 Material delivery and acclimation — 24–72 hours depending on product
  3. 3 Demo and subfloor prep — typically half a day to a full day
  4. 4 Installation — 1–5 days depending on material and square footage
  5. 5 Transitions, trim, and detail work — final 2–4 hours
  6. 6 Final walkthrough and cleanup — same day as completion
