Custom Tile Solutions for Water Valley Homeowners

TAV Construction brings trade-level tile expertise to every Water Valley project. Whether you're renovating a master bath, upgrading your kitchen backsplash, or laying large-format floors through a main living area, our setters have the tools and skill to do it right the first time. We work with ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and glass tile — selecting the correct thinset, movement-joint spacing, and layout pattern for every application.

Shower & Bath Tile

Waterproofing is the foundation of every shower we build. TAV uses Schluter-Kerdi membranes and foam shower bases that are independently tested to zero water transmission. Once the envelope is sealed, we set tile with medium-bed mortar, back-butter every piece, and finish with an epoxy-adjacent or urethane grout rated for wet environments. Niches, benches, and linear drains are waterproofed as part of the same continuous system — not afterthoughts.

  • Schluter-Kerdi waterproofing system
  • Custom shower niches and benches
  • Linear drain and curbless threshold support
  • Porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone options

Kitchen Backsplash

A well-set backsplash transforms a kitchen's character and protects the wall behind your range and sink for decades. TAV installs subway tile, hexagon mosaic, arabesque patterns, and large-format slabs. We handle outlet cut-outs cleanly, terminate tile correctly at cabinets and countertops, and use sanded or unsanded grout matched to your joint width. Color consultation is part of the service — we'll help you pick grout that frames the tile rather than fight it.

  • Subway, mosaic, and large-format slab patterns
  • Clean outlet and fixture cut-outs
  • Grout color consultation included
  • Sealing for natural stone and porous tile

Floor Tile Installation

Floor tile demands a stable, level substrate. We assess existing subfloor conditions, add cement board or self-leveling compound where needed, and install anti-fracture membrane over wood-frame floors to prevent cracking from seasonal movement. Large-format tiles (24×24 and above) require back-buttering and 95%+ contact coverage — a standard we hold on every job. We also offer heated floor rough-in coordination before tile goes down.

  • Subfloor leveling and cement board prep
  • Anti-fracture membrane over wood substrates
  • Large-format tile with full contact coverage
  • Heated floor rough-in coordination

Entryway & Mudroom Tile

North Mississippi red clay is relentless on entry floors. We spec porcelain with a PEI rating of IV or higher for any high-traffic zone — dense enough to resist scratching and impervious to moisture from wet boots. Patterns like herringbone or basketweave add visual interest while hiding the dirt that comes with everyday family life. Transition strips and thresholds are set tight and level with adjacent flooring for a finished result that reads as intentional.

  • PEI IV+ porcelain rated for heavy traffic
  • Herringbone, basketweave, and grid layouts
  • Clean transitions to adjacent flooring
  • Matching grout for cohesive entryway design
The TAV Method

Our Precision Tile Setting Process

Great tile work is invisible when it's done right — flat, square, and solid with no hollow spots or cracked grout joints two years down the road. Every TAV tile job follows the same disciplined process from first site visit through final seal. We don't cut corners on prep because we know that's where failures start.

01

Substrate Assessment & Prep

Before a single tile goes down, we assess the subfloor or wall substrate for deflection, level variation, and moisture. Wood subfloors must meet the L/360 deflection standard for tile. Anything that doesn't gets sistered joists, added plywood, or self-leveling compound. For walls, we verify studs are plumb and install cement board or Schluter foam board as appropriate. This step is non-negotiable — substrate failures cause 90% of tile failures in North Mississippi homes.

02

Layout Planning & Dry-Lay

We snap chalk lines, find the visual center, and dry-lay the first course before mixing any mortar. This preview step catches awkward cuts at doorways or cabinets before they become permanent. For patterned tile — herringbone, offset, or versailles — we mock up the pattern on the floor so you can approve it in person. Adjustments at this stage cost nothing; adjustments after setting cost everything.

03

Mortar Selection & Setting

Thinset selection is matched to tile type: modified polymer thinset for porcelain and ceramic, large-and-heavy-tile (LHT) mortar for 15-lb+ stone slabs, and epoxy thinset for chemical-resistant applications like commercial kitchens. We back-butter every tile larger than 8×8 to ensure full contact and eliminate hollow voids. Tiles are set with consistent joint spacing using calibrated spacers, then checked with a straightedge every few courses to prevent lippage before the mortar sets.

04

Grouting & Joint Finishing

After a minimum 24-hour mortar cure, we mix grout to the correct consistency and work it in sections to prevent premature drying. Joints are packed full, excess grout haze is removed with a damp sponge in multiple passes, and corners and transitions receive silicone caulk — never grout — to accommodate movement without cracking. We offer sanded, unsanded, and epoxy grout options based on joint width and application requirements.

05

Sealing & Final Inspection

Natural stone, unglazed tile, and light-colored grout all require penetrating sealer applied after a full 72-hour cure. We apply two coats, wipe excess, and let you know the re-application schedule based on your traffic level. Final walkthrough is done with a rubber mallet — every tile is tapped to verify no hollow spots remain. Only after that inspection do we hand over the space and document the job with photos for your records.

Serving Yalobusha County

Why Water Valley Homeowners Trust TAV Construction

Water Valley sits in the heart of Yalobusha County, and the homes here range from century-old craftsman bungalows near Main Street to newer construction out toward the county line. TAV has worked across all of them. We understand the foundation movement that comes with North Mississippi clay soil, the moisture challenges of aging homes, and the aesthetic sensibilities of homeowners who take pride in a well-maintained property.

Our tile crews are trade-trained, not self-taught. Every setter on our team has worked through floor and wall applications under supervision before running their own projects. We carry liability insurance, pull permits when required, and communicate timelines honestly — including when unexpected substrate conditions push a job a day longer than planned.

We serve Water Valley and surrounding Yalobusha County communities, with crews also active in Oxford, Coffeeville, and Grenada. Estimates are free, response is same business day, and we never charge a travel fee within our primary service area.

Materials & Options

Tile Materials We Install

Every material has ideal applications and setting requirements. We'll help you match the right tile to your project before you spend a dollar on materials.

Porcelain

Dense, low-absorption, and available in virtually every finish including realistic wood and stone looks. Our go-to for floors, showers, and entryways where durability is the priority. Requires LHT mortar for large formats.

Ceramic

Lighter and easier to cut than porcelain, making it ideal for wall applications and backsplashes. Wide color and texture range at a lower price point. Best for interior applications where moisture exposure is controlled.

Natural Stone

Marble, travertine, slate, and limestone each have distinct setting and sealing requirements. We use white thinset to prevent bleed-through on translucent stone and apply penetrating sealer immediately after cure.

Glass Tile

Requires non-sag white thinset and back-buttering to prevent show-through. Best for backsplashes and accent strips. We score and snap glass tile on-site for clean edges at outlets and cabinet terminations.

Mosaic & Mesh-Mounted

Penny rounds, arabesque, and subway mosaics come mounted on mesh sheets. We align grout joints between sheets before setting to create a seamless look. Ideal for shower floors, feature walls, and niche accents.

Large Format (24×24+)

Requires a flatter substrate, LHT mortar, and back-buttering for full contact. Delivers a modern, seamless appearance with fewer grout lines. We check for lippage every course using a 10-foot straightedge.
